NORTH HAVEN COMMUNITY SCHOOL
SPORTS PARTICIPATION RULES
ATHLETIC GUIDELINES
Student-athletes should understand that interscholastic athletic
participation is a privilege. Team members are afforded the
privilege of representing themselves and their school as long as they
are willing to accept and abide by the school’s athletic code.
High school athletes must always keep in mind that athletic contests
are games designed and conducted to promote the physical, mental,
moral, social, and emotional well-being of the individual players.
Members of a team must recognize that they have the following
responsibilities:
1. They are official representatives of North Haven Community School.
2. They represent their family, friends, and community.
3. They are expected to be good leaders in promoting good citizenship.
4. Their actions, in and out of school, build
student respect and contribute to
improved school
spirit. This responsibility implies that proper respect be given
to
administrators, teachers, coaches, officials, fellow athletes, and the
student body.
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY RULES, PROCEDURES AND GUIDELINES
Academic eligibility to participate in interscholastic athletics is
determined by the NHCS high school faculty and administration at their
weekly Eligibility Meeting, generally held on Tuesday mornings before
the start of school.
1. Student-athletes not on the Honor Roll are
required to fill out and complete a weekly Eligibility Sheet, have it
signed by a parent and turned in to the school office prior to the
weekly Eligibility Meeting. Failure to do so may result in being
declared ineligible until this requirement is met.
2.. Students need to budget their time when
participating in extracurricular or co-curricular activities.
Students may not use their participation in extra-curricular activities
as an explanation for neglecting their school work.
3.. Any student found negligent as determined by the
Eligibility Committee (classroom teachers, Special Education
Department, and Principal) in any of the following areas - Homework,
Attitude/ Behavior, Grades, Effort - may be declared ineligible.
4.
Students are expected to demonstrate an ongoing industrious work ethic,
present consistently cooperative attitudes and behavior, and maintain
acceptable grades (C average with no No Credits). Effort,
cooperation, and behavior apply to participation in class, at
rehearsals, practices, games, performances, programs, and during
team travel, as well as during regular in-school time.
5. Coaches and activity advisors have the
responsibility to encourage students participating in their activity to
meet this requirement during each ranking period.
ACADEMIC INELIGIBILITY LEVELS
When student-athletes fail, or are in danger of failing, to meet
academic and/or eligibility requirements, they, and their parent(s),
will receive a notice of their Academic Eligibility status in writing
from the Athletic Director following the weekly Eligibility
Meeting. The notification letter will identify the Level of the
student-athlete’s ineligibility:
LEVEL I: If a student does not meet the Academic
Eligibility Requirements, the Athletic Director will warn the student
that she/he may not be permitted to participate in the activity if the
deficit is not cleared within one (1) week.
LEVEL II: If a student does not meet the Eligibility
Policy requirements for a second time or if the deficit as established
at Level I is not cleared, the Athletic Director is to advise the
student that she/he may not participate in the activity for a period of
one (1) week and that the deficit must be cleared within that time.
LEVEL III: If a student does not meet the
Eligibility Policy Requirements for a third time or if the deficit as
established at Level II is not cleared, the Athletic Director is to
advise the student that she/he may not participate in the activity for
a period of two (2) weeks, and that the deficit must be cleared
within that time.
LEVEL IV: If a student does not meet the Eligibility
Policy requirements for a fourth time or if the deficit as established
at Level III is not cleared, the Athletic Director is to advise the
student that she/he may not participate in the activity for the balance
of the season.
Students are entitled to, and may request, a hearing with the Principal
and/or Athletic Director before any penalty is determined or imposed.
GENERAL ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION RULES
1. Behavior - Students participating in any NHCS
athletic program are subject to the school’s behavior code and
disciplinary policies during practices, at home and away games, during
trips, and at any team activities.
2. Parental Permission to Participate - Students
must return to the Athletic Director a signed parental permission form
allowing them to participate in the activity.
3. Accident Insurance - Each family is responsible
for its own accident insurance for student-athletes. Information about
insurance available for purchase through the school will be distributed
early in the school year. Student-athletes are not required to
carry medical or accident insurance; however, such insurance coverage
is strongly recommended since the school does not carry a policy on
individual student-athletes.
4. Physical Examination - All NHCS students who
wants to participate in the school’s interscholastic sports
program must have an annual physical examination by a physician prior
to the start of the season. Physical exams by the school
physician will be provided by the school. If a student has had a
physical exam by another physician, the report must be provided to the
school before the student will be allowed to participate.
5. Emergency Medical Treatment - All students will
be given a form to be signed by a parent or a guardian authorizing the
school to procure emergency treatment for an injured child at no
expense to the school. The child must pass a physical examination
conducted by a physician to ensure his/her ability to participate in
the athletic activity. (See "Physical Examination”)
6. School Attendance - Regular school attendance is
required of all student-athletes. Student-athletes absent from
school during all or part of the day of a game or practice shall
not participate in that game or practice, unless it is an excused
absence approved by the Principal. Student-athletes must be in
school on time on the day of a game and on the morning after the
contest, unless excused by a physician or the Principal.
Violation of this provision could mean suspension from the activity at
the discretion of the Principal.
7. Travel To/From Games - All student-athletes are
required to travel to and from out-of-town contests with the team in
school-provided transportation. Permission to return home with
parents after an away contest must be submitted to the Principal and
may be granted only by the Principal or designee. Written
permission from the parent must be received by the Principal before the
trip and the parent must contact the coach before leaving with the
student.
8. Equipment - Student-athletes will be issued the
school’s best appropriate equipment. Each athlete will
assume responsibility for issued school equipment and will be assessed
for any lost, stolen, or damaged items.
9. Dress Code - Student-athletes are expected to be
neatly and appropriately dressed for both home and away contests, as
designated by their coach.
10. Eligibility - Student-athletes must meet
academic disciplinary obligations prior to any type of athletic
participation. ( See “Athletic/Co-Curricular Rules of
Eligibility”).
11. NHCS Handbook - All student- athletes are
expected to be familiar will all rules and policies set forth in the
NHCS Handbook.
