According to the Maine Department of Education, ELOs "are hands-on, credit-bearing experiences (for elective or core credit) outside of the traditional classroom with an emphasis on community-based career exploration. These programs include paid work experiences, expanding educational opportunities in rural Maine, and work skills development."
More information can be found here.
At North Haven Community School, our goal is to encourage a diversity of on and off-island experiences for students in partnership with the small businesses and community programs right in our backyard.
ELOs can take the form of independent projects, career explorations, internship/apprenticeship, or work studies. Experiences can span a quarter, semester, academic year, or longer, depending on the partnership.
