You may have heard during our final exhibition last spring that we were considering the implementation of high school diploma commendations. We formally introduced these new commendations to our high school students and are releasing information to the school community on the application process.
What is a Diploma Commendation?
A Diploma Commendation is a formal recognition students can earn alongside their high school diploma by completing specific academic requirements and at least 60 hours of experiential learning in one of four areas: Community Service (80 hours), Global Citizenship, Leadership, or Visual & Performing Arts.
Each commendation represents a focused pathway that combines coursework, real-world experiences, and a final portfolio or exhibition, demonstrating a student’s sustained engagement and achievement in that domain.
Students will work with their advisors to express their interest and start tracking their experiences.
Can I only start this as a 9th grader?
Absolutely not.
While applying earlier increases the likelihood of meeting all requirements, students at any stage of their high school career are encouraged to apply. They can work with their advisor to review and document past experiences and coursework to determine eligibility. Because this is a new initiative, we will maintain some flexibility in deciding which experiences and courses may count toward a commendation.
Why are we doing this?
Implementing Diploma Commendations provides a meaningful way to recognize students for exceptional achievement and engagement beyond minimum graduation requirements. The program encourages students to take ownership of their learning, explore areas of personal interest, and connect academic work with real-world experiences.
Commendations also reinforce the school’s commitment to competence, compassion, challenge, and community by highlighting the diverse ways students can demonstrate growth—through service, leadership, global awareness, or the arts.
In addition, the system:
Promotes student agency and reflection, as students actively plan and track their experiences across multiple years.
Incentivizes deeper participation in extracurricular programs, Extended Learning Opportunities, and community partnerships.
Strengthens college and career readiness, giving students tangible evidence of initiative, leadership, and applied learning.
Enhances the school’s academic profile, communicating to families and postsecondary institutions that graduates engage in a rigorous, holistic, and values-driven education.
Ultimately, Diploma Commendations help formalize the kind of experiential, place-based, and character-centered learning the school already values—offering students a clear pathway to celebrate their growth and contributions.
