Today, our Grade 7/8 students are off-island attending the Maine Youth Leadership Day at Hyde School in Bath — joining over 1,200 students from across the state! This annual conference, part of the Maine State Leadership Alliance, celebrates the power of student voice, courage, and community leadership.
The day began with an inspiring keynote from Gabe Hoffman-Johnson, Founder and Chief Community Officer of Portland Hearts of Pine, who spoke about building leadership through connection, purpose, and teamwork.
After the opening assembly, 7th graders joined mixed workshop groups alongside peers from schools across Maine, diving into sessions on character, resilience, and communication. Meanwhile, our 8th graders proudly represented North Haven as one of only a few student presenter groups at the entire conference!
Their workshop, titled “Leadership in Small Communities: When Everyone Must Step Up,” invites participants to explore what leadership looks like in a year-round island community — where everyone has a role to play, and courage often means showing up for one another.
As the smallest school in attendance, our students are leading with heart, humility, and pride. We couldn’t be more proud of how they’re representing both North Haven Community School and the wider island community.
